Cingjing is actually called Qingjing Highlands. It can get much colder than the other parts of Taiwan, especially if you’re at the peaks (such as Joy Mountain / 合欢山 (11,207 feet). When you drive up from Taichung to Cingjing in the daytime (end-January), the temperature was easily 0-2 degree Celsius outdoors. it could be snowing when you are reaching the mountainous zone. January is also the time the cold surge hit countries like Taiwan, Hong Kong and China. So check Cingjing weather forecast before your trip! Bring those winter clothing if you have to, do not save on your baggage loads.
If it snows too much, the roads will be slippery and cars need to add snow chains to the wheels. Authorities might close off the roads if they’re too dangerous. So do expect delay in travelling to the extent to one full day.
Cingjing is especially cold in the early morning and at night. When the sun comes out, the temperature will rise significantly.
There is usually no heater in the room at all. There is also no air-conditioning unit that can blow out hot air out either. Which means the room is cold during early morning and night time. This is actually quite common. However, you might be able to rent a heater from the minsu-owner, depending on availability, you can request for heater before your trip starts as you will be given a contact number and email to contact them.
If it’s cold weather and you have young kids with you, be fast in preparing them for and after showers in order to not have them catch a chill. Water-heater in the bathroom for showering is common. And the floor gets very cold to step on too, so get ready your bedroom slippers and leave them outside your shower room. Some Minsu do have electric blankets for their guests too. The standard amenities inside your room will be basic and minimal. There is a television in most rooms too. Hot drinking water is available at the reception. The only thing to do in the room is to snuggle under the blanket to watch TV programs and fall asleep after.
Families travelling with elderly people need to note this especially. Even the popular Homestay including Starry Minsu, and DreamTown Minsu and Star Villa, do not come with lifts. Your Minsu room could be at level 1 or even level 4. So be prepared to carry your luggage up to a few levels to your room.
Just like other kinds of homestays / rented apartments / AirBNBs not just in Cingjing or Taiwan alone, if you’re staying for more than one night, do not expect housekeeping in the morning while you’re out for the day. A Minsu is not a hotel. They usually only do housekeeping until your departure. Do check with your Minsu for confirmation.
Stashed away from the craziness of a city, there are no vehicle noises nor exhaust, no screaming children or people throwing tantrums. It is generally quiet and peaceful being at any of the Cingjing Minsu. It feels so good to deeply inhale the freshness of the mountain air. And to listen to the sounds of nature when the sun is out, and water dripping down streams somewhere somehow below. Totally lovely.
The owners of Cingjing Minsu are usually very hospitable and warm people. Many of the Minsu owners will be happy to help you arrange transport to the popular Cingjing attractions downhill such as to Green Green Grasslands or Swiss Gardens.
It’s really awesome to have a delicious, homely style of steamboat for dinner when the weather is chilly outside! This amount of food can be prepared ahead by the Minsu owner and is more than sufficient for the amount of pax you booked for. All you have to do is to cook them in the steamboat.
These are many kind of activities you can expect at your minsu (*subject to weather conditions). You can watch the sun rise over the mountains at the common patio outside at your room if the Minsu you book has one, and if you would like, you can join a tour to catch the sunrise at Joy Mountain. You can book it via the Minsu owners the day before.
Although there is usually Wifi at the Minsu, the atmosphere, the surroundings are too lovely to neglect if you turn your attention to the phone. With the sun out, it is a lovely temperature to be outdoors, where you can sit with your family, travel companions or other travelers who are also staying at the Minsu.

How to get there? When you reach Tai Chung HSR station, alight and head down to the ground level to get your bus ticket up to CingJing. While you’re on your way down at the ground level, you’ll be bugged by Taxi drivers wanting to drive you there. They’re pretty persistent and will try any method to get you to take their taxi. This is when you have to shrug them off and proceed directly to the bus ticket counter. Furthermore, the bus ticket package also includes the CingJing farm where you get to see lots of Sheep. The bus ticket will cost you 600 NTD per pax. The bus trip will take about 90 to 120 minutes to reach Cingjing bus station and from there on, take a local cab to Juby Landscape Villa | Cingjing Minsu.
