Things to do in Yilan

Luodong Night Market

Luodong Night Market is the top 5 Taiwan night market in Taiwan, Yilan, and is located next to Luodong Park. It is always crowded, and is one of the best places for shopping and dining. The traditional snacks here are popular to both local residents and visitors such as the scallion pancake. Moreover, the night market also covers shops of clothing, shoes, accessories, and utensils of daily life. Situated in the center of Luodong, Luodong Night Market is a famous tourism spot with many stores. Iced maniocs with red beans stuffing are original invention of Luodong, and the original store is in the night market. Another signature dish is medicine mutton soup; anyone has to wait in a long line in order to get a seat. Besides, rice noodle thick soup is also one of the famous Yilan dishes, and one can have the most traditional taste here. Street food vendors are all gathered around Luodong Park, offer low-price and various night snacks, such as Yilan specialties smoked duck, salty rice noodle, and Yilan Scallion Pancake. Overall, Luodong Night Market is a wonderful place to shop and dine.

Jiaosi Hot Spring

iaoxi Hot Spring is one of a very rare hot springs in Taiwan that is extremely rich in minerals. The water of Jiaoxi Hot Spring is a sodium bicarbonate hot spring that is extremely rich in sodium, magnesium, calcium, potassium, and carbonic acid ions.

Being sodium bicarbonate hot springs, Jiaoxi Hot Spring are odorless and clear, and it maintains a temperature of around 58° C. A soak in the pool is relaxing and comfortable, leaving the skin smooth but not sticky. As the water is drinkable, Jiaoxi Hot Springs vegetable is another well-known feature of Jiaosi.

Hot spring bath in Jiaosi is now very popular among tourists.  Hundred hotels, restaurants, and bath pools, make the area a unique hot spring village.

Wufengchi Waterfall

The Wufengqi Falls are one of the eight great scenic spots of the Lanyang Plains, belonging to Jiao River (Jioxi) Township in Yilan County. The Wufengqi Falls are named for the five sharp peaks which stand in a row behind the falls, that look like the five triangular banners that usually hang down the back of the war generals costume in Chinese Opera. Fog and mist drift gracefully around the mountaintop year-long, and torrents of mountain springs continuously flow down its slopes, forming the three layers of cascades that are now the Wufengqi Falls. There are three layers to the Falls, and they measure 100 meters from top to bottom. The entrance to the scenic viewpoint is situated near the bottom layer of the Falls, and there is also a barbecue area, and a play area for children to splash in the pools. A viewing pavilion is constructed at the mid-layer of the Falls; there is a vast expanse of vision at this point, and tourists may enjoy viewing the lush mountains, and the cascades shooting out from the precipices. The scene in the eight famous scenic views of Lanyang that is poetically named, mists draping the western peaks refers to the Wufengqi Falls. The Falls are situated in an enclosed valley, which enhances the mystic beauty of the peaks. At dawn, as the sky slowly begins to brighten, musical birdsong can be heard resonating throughout the valley; the unique tranquility in the atmosphere is indescribable.

Dongshan River Water Park

The (Dongshan River) Water Park Construction Project began in 1987 and was completed on the day of the Dragon Boat Festival in 1994. It aims to fully utilize the Dongshan River and its surrounding areas, turning this area into an open public leisure zone full of water and greenness.

The park itself is themed by “getting near water, immersing in green.” It demonstrates a peaceful co-existence between nature and mankind. According to functions, the park is divided into three parts, boating zone, shallow pool, and deep water area. In the boating zone, you can practice rowing dragon boats and western competition boats. You can also just row a small boat leisurely to enjoy the water and the sky and spend some romantic time with your loved ones.

The water level in the shallow pool only reaches an adult’s ankles. Even children can have as much fun as they wish with their parents there. The big white rocks in the pool and the crescent-shaped wall made of small stones indicate something special. The big rocks symbolize swimming ducks. The wall represents fences of a duck-keeping area. They are the two most important elements of a traditional Yilan village household.

At the deep water area, there is a general swimming pool, a PE pool and a “river trip” waterway. The water there is about 120cm deep. At the PE pool, children can join water games or train themselves a little. The waterway simulates the Lanyang River. Unlike most poolside straight waterways, this one is crooked as a real river and you shall have lots of fund riding it.

At the river park, you can watch beautiful mountains and waters with your family or have some crazy water fun. Be sure to bring your water gear along in the summer to enjoy the facilities!
